# The Boy: notice

The Boy is built on **A Dark Room** by Doublespeak Games (Michael Townsend and contributors),
https://github.com/doublespeakgames/adarkroom, used under the Mozilla Public License 2.0 (LICENSE.md in this folder).
Source taken from commit 1fada4620b6c66bd07bf15a3f1eb8223df8bc1d7 (23 May 2025).

The code lives in the theme's assets/the-boy/ folder and is served unminified (only renamed with a content hash), so its source is what is published. Files and where they come from:

- `adr-ui.js`: the cooldown button and the fading message log, ported from A Dark Room's `script/Button.js` and
`script/notifications.js` to plain JavaScript (no jQuery, no state manager). MPL-2.0.
- `adr.css`: the look (Times on dark, outlined buttons with a cooldown bar, the faded message column, the stores box),
  adapted from A Dark Room's `css/main.css`, `css/room.css` and `css/dark.css`. MPL-2.0.
- `the-boy.js`: the game itself, new code, released under the same MPL-2.0. Since 30 October 2026 it follows A Dark Room's
real-time design (a cooling fire, cooldowns, location tabs, legend boxes, timed events in a panel), rebuilt from reading
  `script/room.js`, `script/outside.js`, `script/events.js`, `script/notifications.js` and `script/header.js`; the cost
tooltip in `adr-ui.js` follows `script/Button.js`. An earlier day-by-day version is kept unpublished in `archive/`. It borrows A Dark Room's fire and room
wording ("the fire is dead.", "the room is freezing.") and its idea of a fire that must be kept.
